Housing in Cities: Second multi-stakeholder conversation at the Governance Platform
On the 30th of August 12 actors discussed “The Role of Private Housing Companies for Rental Regulation and Transparency in the Housing Market” at the Allianz Forum in Berlin. The event was organized by the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform and moderated by Professor Gesine Schwan.
After a lively discussion at the first meeting on 3 June 2019 the need for an additional debate was recognized and a second meeting was scheduled. At the second meeting in August, representatives from politics and administration, business and organized civil society jointly explored problems and options for leasing and greater transparency in the housing market in cities. The participants explored ways to promote affordable housing in the competitive housing markets of major German cities. In particular, the direction and compatibility of regulation of the market, current political instruments (such as rental caps), and the question of new construction were discussed.
This second conversation allowed a confidential exchange of views on the responsibility of private housing companies, despite the current conflictual urban climate. With a vision to foster a culture of reasoned argumentation, the actors were able to voice conflicting positions in a mutually understandable and common conversation.
