Dr. Gerd Leipold

Biography

Gerd Leipold was Executive Director of the global environmental organisation Greenpeace from 2001 to 2009. The focus of his work was the expansion of Greenpeace in Asia and Latin America, the opening of the first Greenpeace office in Africa and the prioritisation of Greenpeace's climate campaign.

In the 1980s, he helped set up the German Greenpeace office as managing director. From 1987 to 1992, he led Greenpeace's international disarmament campaigns.

He was involved in many spectacular Greenpeace actions. In August 1983, for example, he flew a hot air balloon from West Berlin over the Berlin Wall into the former GDR to protest against the nuclear weapons tests of the four Allied occupying powers.

In 1992, he founded his own consultancy Gem Partners Ltd in London, specialising in strategy and communication.

Today, he also advises companies on sustainability, works with scientific institutions to improve their communication and supports NGOs in strategy development and communication. He volunteers as Chairman of the University Council of Biberach University of Applied Sciences and the Advisory Board of Welthungerhilfe.

Gerd Leipold studied physics and oceanography in Munich, Hamburg and San Diego. He completed his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg with the Nobel Prize Winner Klaus Hasselmann with a thesis on large-scale ocean circulation.
