Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul (until July 2020)

Biography

Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul is co-founder and partner of the Berlin Governance Platform.

Mrs Wieczorek-Zeul is Vice-President of the Friends of the Global Fund Europe, a member of the Council for Sustainable Development and a member of the Supervisory Board of the International Partnership for Microbicides (IPM).

Mrs Wieczorek-Zeul was Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development and Governor of the World Bank from 1998 to 2009, and was also a member of the German Bundestag from 1987 to 2013. Throughout her career, she was an advocate for the health of women and girls and for the needs of those affected by HIV/AIDS, and also campaigned for these issues in her government offices.

Prior to her time as a minister, Mrs Wieczorek-Zeul was a Member of the European Parliament (1979-1987), where she focused on foreign trade and European development policy issues as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. She was also deputy federal chairwoman of her party, the SPD, from 1993 to 2015.
