Biography

Prof Dr Stephan Breidenbach is co-founder and partner of the Berlin Governance Platform gGmbH.

Stephan Breidenbach works as a university lecturer, mediator and entrepreneur. He holds the Chair of Civil Law, Civil Procedure and International Business Law at the European University Viadrina, is Professor of Mediation at the University of Vienna and has held visiting professorships and lectureships at Renmin University Beijing, the Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt and the University of St. Gallen, among others. He was co-founder and Dean of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance in Berlin.

Since the mid-1990s, Stephan Breidenbach has worked as a commercial mediator, in particular in disputes between large companies and in the public sphere, as an arbitrator in national and international commercial disputes and as a consultant in major proceedings. He is an arbitrator at the CAS (Court of Arbitration of Sports). In 2002, Stephan Breidenbach was awarded the Socrates Prize for Mediation.

As an EU advisor to the governments of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, he was responsible for the harmonisation of the Czech banking, insurance and capital markets, among other things.
In 2011/12, Stephan Breidenbach was coordinator of the topic "How do we want to learn?" in Chancellor Angela Merkel's dialogue on the future.
