The fifth Trialogue event took place on 12 January 2017 in cooperation with the "Energy Systems of the Future" (ESYS) project. Under the heading "Setting the course for urban mobility - how do we make the right decisions?", the challenges of path dependencies in the energy transition were discussed based on specific problems in urban mobility systems.

Path dependencies refer to developments that can be characterised along the dimensions of technology development and installation, production and market penetration, usage practices and discourses. Today's structures of urban mobility are characterised by path dependencies from the past. At the same time, current decisions - for example regarding drive technologies - are guiding developments for the coming decades.
