From the Sea to the City

In order to give new impetus to the EU's stalled asylum and migration reform, we are working on Europe-wide strategic partnerships between civil society initiatives and local actors who are committed to a progressive, solidarity-based and pragmatic EU migration policy.

From The Sea To The City (FSTC) is a European civil society network consisting of several NGOs and grassroots political initiatives. FSTC was founded at the end of 2019 with the aim of joining forces and promoting a fundamental change in EU migration policy that puts the human rights of refugees and host communities at the centre. As part of the network, the Berlin Governance Platform works closely with organisations such as Mediterranea and Moving Cities. All participating organisations and initiatives are active in the field of migration and anti-racism and share a vision of European migration policy in which European cities and municipalities should play a key role as important governance stakeholders. FSTC provides an exchange space for knowledge, contacts and strategies to support municipalities in taking an active role in European migration and refugee policy.

In June 2021, the network co-organised the conference "From the Sea to the City. A conference of cities for a welcoming Europe" in Palermo in June 2021. At the conference International Safe Haven Alliance (IASH), an informal network of European cities that work together for a more humanitarian approach to European asylum policy and more legal migration routes, as well as for European municipalities to have a say in the organisation of the European migration system. FSTC is actively involved in this project from a civil society perspective.
