How Trialogs support participation in urban development

Participation in housing is a political objective and an important issue for Berlin’s housing cooperatives. The guidelines for participation in construction and densification of housing developed in 2017 are crucial for better participation of residents. Currently, Berlin’s housing cooperatives stabilize and standardize their collaboration with Berlin’s tenants’ committees. At the same time, the project “New Urban Agenda Berlin” of the Technical University in cooperation with the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform takes up the topic of housing once again.

The HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform facilitates communication between actors of the private sector, politics and civil society organisations in order to contribute to solutions for urban development in the public interest. In 2017 a series of Trialogs organised by the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform on behalf of Berlin’s six housing cooperatives resulted in guidelines for participation in housing. Subsequently, the housing cooperatives together with the tenants’ committees developed standards for their cooperation, articulated in the guidelines for tenants’ committees, which were introduced in May 2018.

Next to that, the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA Governance Platform together wit the TU Berlin promotes the topic of housing in urban development within the project „New Urban Agenda Berlin“. Through transdisciplinary trialogs, research and the urban society will enter into dialog in order to identify urgent problems in housing, find common opportunities for actions and develop research questions. A trialog on the topic of housing in Berlin will take place on December, 7 2018.
