Berlin is one of the top 3 travel destinations in Europe and tourism is an important part of Berlin's economy. However, the ongoing tourism boom is increasingly viewed critically by many Berliners. Growing numbers of visitors in inner-city residential areas pose new challenges for the city: Conflicts over the use of urban spaces and resources, higher traffic volumes, and increasing waste and noise pollution are emerging.

The format

We transcribe and evaluate our trialogues® from a social science perspective. The result is published here in the detailed report "Tourism in Berlin: How much tourism can the growing city take? It contains arguments and their justifications of all trialogue®-participants and relates them to each other. In the long term, the interfaces between science and urban society will serve as points of reference for initiating transdisciplinary projects in the city.

The Trialog®

Our final Trialog® "Tourism in Berlin: How much tourism can the growing city take?" as part of the New Urban Agenda Berlin project addressed the question of how steadily growing tourism in Berlin could be designed and used in a sustainable, economically efficient and city-friendly way. More than 80 participants from science, politics and administration, business and organized civil society discussed pressing challenges and options for action on March 14, 2019.
