Cities and municipalities across Europe have shown their voluntary willingness to welcome protection seekers in recent years. These welcoming municipalities are growing in number and, together with the many civil society groups, they stand for a Europe of solidarity that respects human rights and takes responsibility for the protection of human lives.
Since 2015, talk of the supposed refugee crisis has been ubiquitous. According to UNHCR, by the end of 2020, more than 80 million people worldwide were fleeing, but most of them do not make it to Europe and remain in the Global South. In fact, the crisis is the lack of access to protection via regulated, safe routes to Europe.

Am 25. und 26. Juni werden Bürgermeister*innen aus ganz Europa gemeinsam mit zivilgesellschaftlichen Akteuren in Palermo zu einer Konferenz der Städte für ein solidarisches Europa zusammenkommen und Lösungen zur Aufnahme geflüchteter Menschen vorschlagen.
Wir freuen uns endlich das Datum unserer gemeinsamen Konferenz bekannt zu geben! Die Konferenz wird von From the Sea to the City, einem europäischen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerk in Zusammenarbeit mit den Städten Palermo und Potsdam organisiert.
Cities and municipalities are not only central actors when it comes to providing protection, integration and social cohesion, they are also centers for business and development. At the same time, they must find effective local solutions to the effects of transnational challenges and thus make an important contribution to global problem-solving.
