Dr Anja Mihr

Biography

Anja Mihr is a political scientist and director of the Berlin Governance Centre on Governance through Human Rights. She currently holds a DAAD professorship for politics, human rights, governance and transformation processes at the OSCE Academy in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.  

Previously, she held the Franz Haniel Chair for Public Policy at the Willy Brandt School for Public Policy at the University of Erfurt and worked for many years as a professor at the Institute for Human Rights (SIM) at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Prior to that, she was Programme Director of the European Programme for Human Rights and Democratisation at the Global Campus for Human Rights in Venice. She has held visiting professorships at the Minerva Centre for Human Rights at Hebrew University in Israel, Beida University in Beijing, China and Columbia University in New York, among others.  

In 2001, she completed her doctorate at the Free University of Berlin on the subject of "Amnesty International in the GDR" and subsequently worked for the German Institute for Human Rights, The Hague Institute for Global Justice, the OSCE in Albania, the GIZ and the UNESCO Chair for Human Rights at the University of Magdeburg, as well as being Director of Research at the Humboldt University of Berlin.  

Since 2018, she has been a member and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency in Vienna. From 2002-2006, Mihr was on the board of Amnesty International Germany and was chairwoman of the organisation for two years.
