Peter Conze

Biography

Peter Conze is co-founder and partner of the Berlin Governance Platform gGmbH. As part of the organisation, he deals with raw materials issues and various transparency initiatives. He is a member of the advisory board of the Garment Industries Transparency Initiative.

Peter Conze worked in German development cooperation for 35 years. He worked for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH as an assistant to the Management Board, Government Advisor in the Ministry of Finance and the organisation's representative in Somalia, as Head of Division for Southern Africa and, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, as GIZ's first Head of Division for Eastern Europe. After a period as Programme Manager for the German Government's development policy contribution to Expo 2000 in Hanover, he spent seven years as Head of the Africa Division at GIZ Head Office and finally five years as Director of GIZ's regional office in South Africa.

Peter Conze was a member of the GIZ Supervisory Board for 20 years as a representative of the employees and senior managers, at times as Deputy Chairman.

In 1993, Peter Conze was one of the founders of the anti-corruption organisation Transparency International. He is currently one of the 28 personal members of the global organisation, advises the organisation's International Secretariat on African issues and is a member of the board of Transparency International Germany. Peter Conze regularly speaks at conferences or at German universities on issues relating to the fight against corruption or development policy with Africa.

Peter Conze studied law, economics and politics in Fribourg, Geneva and Munich. He is a fully qualified lawyer and completed a Master's programme in International Relations at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston, USA, after completing his legal training.
