Moving Cities guide to action: How municipalities can protect people

Legal scope for the independent admission and relocation of refugees from abroad

In the civil society network, among others From the Sea to the City we work closely with Moving Cities together. In their newly published guidelines, they show how local authorities can protect refugees.

Thousands of people lose their lives every year when fleeing to Europe. In order to put an end to this humanitarian catastrophe, over 300 municipalities in Germany have publicly pledged to "Safe harbours", signalling their willingness to take in people rescued from distress at sea or stranded in refugee camps such as Moria. But what legal scope do local authorities in Germany have to take action themselves?

The Moving Cities guide to action answers this question and presents 20 concrete ways in which cities in solidarity can contribute to the reception and relocation of refugees from abroad. Included as an inspiring example of municipal willingness to welcome refugees: our project Re:Match - Relocation via Matching.
