New Urban Agenda Berlin

Within the two years Project duration (2018 to 2020) organised TU Berlin, in cooperation with the Berlin Governance Platform four trialogues and four trialogue project groups on the urban policy challenges of mobility, immigration, housing and tourism.

Berlin is growing at an unexpectedly dynamic rate. The city's infrastructure is not yet prepared for this. The increasing number of conflicts over space and utilisation clearly shows that shaping the city requires a productive and consensus-oriented debate between different social interest groups in order to develop sustainable solutions. The major transformations caused by urbanisation and climate change are also placing new demands on science and universities. In addition to researching the current situation, the problems and the development of viable future scenarios, concepts, initiatives, instruments and measures need to be developed to help shape the necessary transformation.

For the future of Berlin, it is important to adapt the transport infrastructure to future needs, to implement solutions for the integration of immigrants, to organise the increasing tourism in a sustainable manner and to provide residents with housing that meets their needs. The The aim of the transdisciplinary project "New Urban Agenda Berlin" was to contribute to the understanding of current and future challenges of the growing city and aimed at an understanding-orientated debate between different social interest groups. By means of dialogues® and trialogue project groups were with the participation of all stakeholders - from politics and administration, organised civil society, local business and science - developed concrete transdisciplinary strategies for action and provided new impetus for Berlin's urban society.

Within the two years Project duration (2018 to 2020) organised TU Berlin, in cooperation with the Berlin Governance Platform four Trialogues® and four trialogue project groups on the urban policy challenges of mobility, immigration, housing and tourism. The entire transdisciplinary process - from the definition of a field of action or a research question, to the development of a specific project design and the implementation of the project - was analysed in detail. actively supported. The project uncovered current research needs, generated new findings and new knowledge through communication in order to derive options for action and to further develop and test these in pilot projects.

Predecessor project:

As part of the trialogue series "Aufbruch Stadt: Für zukünftige Infrastrukturen" (2016), stakeholders from urban society discussed transdisciplinary questions and project ideas with researchers. Transdisciplinary dialogues were jointly developed by Technische Universität Berlin and the Berlin Governance Platform in order to create a suitable method for the much-discussed demands for the social connectivity of research through transdisciplinary work. As part of the trialogue series, stakeholders from urban society discussed issues and project ideas with researchers in order to arrive at transdisciplinary questions and project ideas. Over a period of eleven months (February 2016 - December 2016), a total of four trialogues were prepared and carried out for the TU Berlin as part of the project.

Further information on the joint activities to expand and promote the transdisciplinary research principle at TU Berlin can be found at here. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christine Ahrend, Vice President of TU Berlin, talks about the added value of the Trialogues for transdisciplinary research here.
