Transition to Stability: How are people seeking protection doing after 12 months in their new community?

Follow-up evaluation report: 12-month results of Re:Match - Relocation via Matching

11 February 2025

New insights into integration and stability

Re:Match publishes the latest evaluation report "Transition to Stability - 12 Month Results" and thus supplements the evaluation report published in 2024 "From arrival to belonging: results after 6 months" with valuable new data and insights into how data-supported matching of people seeking protection and cities can successfully promote integration.

The results of this report are again based on interviews with the 78 Ukrainian asylum seekers who were distributed to six German municipalities via Re:Match in 2023 and admitted there. And they continue the positive trend of the 6-month evaluation: After 12 months, even more participants rate the decision to take part in Re:Match and also the match with the new municipality as good, build up close relationships locally and rate their future prospects for themselves and their families as positive.

A special success

Participation in language courses is seen by Re:Match participants as the key to successful integration and entry into the local labour market - and therefore as the foundation for an independent life. This assessment is reflected in the activities of the participants: After 12 months, an above-average number of participants had already acquired basic to intermediate language skills in German courses and continue to invest in improving their German language skills and in vocational (further) training. As expected, progress in integration into the labour market increased after six to 12 months, especially for participants with good language skills.

A look into the future

The results of the 12-month evaluation once again show the great potential of Re:Match for the successful integration of people seeking protection who are admitted via relocation or other humanitarian programmes.

Integration into the labour market remains the greatest challenge for all those seeking protection. For this reason, the Re:Match team will increasingly focus on the question of how the matching of protection seekers and municipalities can be improved with a view to successful labour market integration, e.g. by also taking more detailed information on local labour market integration programmes into account.
