In 2024, the „Energy Transition Twinned Town“ project, funded by the Federal Foreign Office, entered its third round. The The Renewable Energy Agency (AEE) and the Berlin Governance Platform (BGP) wanted to use this to once again support local authorities in their commitment to cross-border dialogue.

The aim was to strengthen existing town twinning arrangements through the topic of renewable energy and to initiate new partnerships. Alongside the Exchange of knowledge and experience Regarding new technologies in the energy sector, the project aimed – based on the needs of the municipalities – to implement transformation projects such as a municipal heat planning, participation processes or the construction of wind or photovoltaic parks trigger.

Following the selection and connection of four interested cities and Communities from Germany with two municipalities from Ukraine, one from the Republic of Moldova and one from Bosnia and Herzegovina. the participating municipalities could expect a diverse exchange over the coming two years, both with their partner municipalities and with experts from the renewable energy sector, practical partners, and politicians from Germany and the rest of Europe.

Following a launch event at the Federal Foreign Office in autumn 2024, two physical/digital workshops within each of the four municipal pairs focusing on the local energy transition, online dialogue formats for further training, and working meetings were planned. Policy briefs on relevant topics, a digital closing event, and a knowledge-sharing and networking trip to Brussels rounded off the project. Intensive public relations work was used to promote the municipal partnerships within the framework of the project.
