Municipal Development Council
in Niesky

In Niesky, a municipal development advisory board is discussing the town's economic future.

Niesky is a large district town in the Upper Lusatia region of Saxony. Almost 10,000 inhabitants live here. The town has a long tradition of wagon construction and industrial timber construction.

Niesky is a model municipality for citizen participation in Saxony. In addition to our model project Municipal Development Councils, Niesky also took part in the participation format "jugend.entscheidet!" participation format.

In 2022-2023, Niesky was a partner municipality in the pilot project "Municipal development councils - shaping the future together locally" funded by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb).

WegWeiserWirtschaft: Ideas for the economic development of the city

Under the title "WegWeiserWirtschaft" ("WegWeiser Economy"), the Municipal Development Advisory Board analysed the economic development of the large district town. Where does Niesky see itself in ten years' time? As a 'dormitory town', an industrial centre or something completely different? What criteria should be applied to future decisions on economic issues? Based on these considerations, the advisory board examined the conditions under which a railway test track project could be located.
